A desktop that
keeps moving.
Haze turns animated Metal gradients, video and stills into your macOS wallpaper — and into the screensaver that follows it. Free, open source, and quiet enough to forget it is running.

You are looking at the app’s own gradient engine — try a palette
One library. Two screens.
Drop in a video, a GIF, a photo, or build a gradient by hand. What you pick becomes your wallpaper. Leave the screensaver on Match wallpaper and it follows along on its own — same renderer, no second setup.
Switch it without breaking stride.
Haze lives in the menu bar, not the Dock. The panel shows what is playing, the wallpapers you reached for last, and the rest as a grid you can search — with a speed slider for whatever is on screen right now.
It stops drawing when you stop looking.
A wallpaper nobody can see is wasted battery. Cover the desktop with a window and Haze pauses — the same when the display sleeps, the screen locks, or, if you ask it to, whenever you unplug.
- ~0%
- CPU while the desktop is covered
- Rendering stops outright — video stops decoding, the Metal view stops ticking.
- Metal
- Gradients, not video loops
- Drawn on the GPU at a capped frame rate, so they cost a fraction of a looping file.
- GPL-3.0
- Open source, no account
- No telemetry, no sign-in, no upsell. Read the code, build it yourself.
Put it on your desktop.
Already have an older build? Versions up to v0.1.3 cannot update themselves — download once by hand and every update after that is automatic.
